INTERVIEW/ COMMENT: FIRST ANNIVERSARY OF M4 SPEED CAMERAS - HOW EFFECTIVE ARE THEY?
Tomorrow (Tuesday 26th September) marks the first anniversary of the M4 variable speed cameras, installed along a 13km stretch between junctions 24 (Coldra) and 28 (Tredegar Park) to tackle congestion during busy periods and encourage safer driving. Confused.com motoring editor, Amanda Stretton, discusses just how effective the installation of the speed cameras has been in catching speedy drivers.
“This M4 stretch is one of the most recent roads to adopt variable speed cameras, which have now been operating for a year (26th September 2016). An investigation by Confused.com found that 13,211 drivers were caught speeding in the first five months alone.
“When considering the maximum fine for speeding is now £2,500 per offence, drivers caught speeding on the M4 stretch through Newport in this time will have faced up to £33m in fines.
“Of course, speeding can land drivers with more than just an expensive ticket as motorists with points for speeding can also face increased car insurance costs at point of renewal. So if you are one of the many drivers who has recently received a speeding ticket, you should consider shopping around and comparing prices online.”
