School holidays bring joy to commuters - 10…

With 10.9M cars off of Britain's roads due to the school holidays, less traffic means less road rage. Amanda Stretton, motoring editor at Confused.com, says: "More than two fifths of drivers (42%) will experience a faster commute now schools have broken up for the summer – shorter by four minutes on average. And many (39%) say they are a calmer driver as a result. “It might not seem a lot, but quieter roads means a less stressful commute, something that will be welcomed by one in seven (15%) who arrive at work annoyed due to bad traffic. It is no surprise one in five (22%) wish there were more school holidays as journeys would be a lot quicker and easier throughout the year.”

Comment: start of school holidays means big…

Today, motorists are being warned to expect traffic mayhem on 'Frantic Friday' as the school holiday getaway begins.  Amanda Stretton, motoring editor at Confused.com, says: "A warning to drivers – be prepared for frantic Friday. There will be a surge in traffic as schools break up for the summer and families up and down the country make the most of the first weekend of the holidays. Follow the lead of one in four (27%) drivers who leave extra early or slightly later to avoid peak periods. “Drivers should be vigilant and check journey times before venturing out. On the bright side, once this weekend is over many drivers will see their daily commute cut down significantly.”

New research released today highlights the extent to which drivers are subjecting themselves to asymmetrical skin damage at the wheel. With the heat-wave set to continue across the UK, drivers are at risk even when windows are closed. This is because UV rays can still pass through the windscreen and side windows. DRIVING EXAMINERS SET TO STRIKE OVER NEW…

** ALL CONTENT FREE TO USE AND FREE OF COPYRIGHT RESTRICTIONS ** Driving examiners are to stage a 48-hour strike from 4 December, the day the new driving test is launched. The Public and Commercial Service union (PCS) said up to 2,000 of its members will take part in the walkout. The union has called for the new test to be suspended pending a full safety review, and wants a limit of six tests a day for examiners. Mark Serwotka, PCS general secretary said: “Our members, whose jobs are about ensuring our roads are safe for drivers and pedestrians, have voted overwhelmingly to demonstrate that these changes are unacceptable.” For more information, please contact charlotte@the10group.co.uk / 020 7637 0656

INTERVIEW/ COMMENT: FIRST ANNIVERSARY OF M4…

Tomorrow (Tuesday 26th September) marks the first anniversary of the M4 variable speed cameras, installed along a 13km stretch between junctions 24 (Coldra) and 28 (Tredegar Park) to tackle congestion during busy periods and encourage safer driving. Confused.com motoring editor, Amanda Stretton, discusses just how effective the installation of the speed cameras has been in catching speedy drivers.   “This M4 stretch is one of the most recent roads to adopt variable speed cameras, which have now been operating for a year (26th September 2016). An investigation by Confused.com found that 13,211 drivers were caught speeding in the first five months alone.   “When considering the maximum fine for speeding is now £2,500 per offence, drivers caught speeding on the M4 stretch through Newport in this time will have faced up to £33m in fines.   “Of course, speeding can land drivers with more than just an expensive ticket as motorists with points for speeding can also face increased car insurance costs at point of renewal. So if you are one of the many drivers who has recently received a speeding ticket, you should consider shopping around and comparing prices online.” To arrange an interview with motoring editor Amanda Stretton, please contact charlotte@the10group.co.uk

INTERVIEW: MOTOR EXPERT URGES DRIVERS TO…

To arrange an interview please contact deborah@the10group.co.uk 0207 637 0656 In light of news that an unoccupied Volkswagen rolled backwards down a hill and went over a wall before coming to rest on a parked Fiat 500 in Glasgow, Confused.com’s Motoring Editor Amanda Stretton is reminding drivers to leave their vehicle parked safely when on a slope. Amanda Stretton says: “The incident that occurred yesterday really could have ended in disaster. If you are parking on a hill, especially in wet weather, it is important to ensure you’ve parked in the appropriate gear and that your handbrake is up for complete security. “If you are parking facing downhill make sure to turn your wheels towards the curb and park in reverse, whereas if you are facing uphill turn the wheels away from the curb (to the right) and leave it in 1st gear.”

Glastonbury traffic chaos explained - Video …

As festival goers report taking six hours to travel two miles as they attempt to get to Glastonbury, Amanda Stretton - former racing driver and Motoring Editor at Confused.com - is calling for closer cooperation between festivals and police in order reduce traffic chaos. Adverse weather conditions mean roads near the Worthy Farm site have become churned up, adding problems to the already large numbers of vehicles heading to the festival. Amanda Stretton, Motoring Editor at Confused.com says, “Large numbers of people heading to festivals by car every year causes predictable traffic jams which is highly frustrating for festival goers as well as local people who become trapped in the annual gridlock. Organisers and local police need to reassess traffic flow and provide people other means of transport to the event which will take the pressure off the already congested roads. "If you can't leave later than originally anticipated, motorists should at least be prepared before they set out on a journey - for instance by checking your tyres, making sure your car battery is charged and making sure the car is topped up with water."  TO ARRANGE AN INTERVIEW PLS CONTACT: deborah@the10group.co.uk   Please note that Amanda is available to comment on future automotive/motoring safety stories where appropriate. Do get in touch.
