Comment/Interview: MPs call for ban on new diesel and petrol cars before 2040
MPs have today called on the UK Government to bring forward the 2040 ban of new petrol and diesel cars. Amanda Stretton, motoring editor at Confused.com says:
“Air pollution caused by cars is an important issue, and one that drivers are overwhelmingly concerned about too. According to our own research, more than three in four (78%) drivers care about the effect that their car has on air quality. It’s therefore unsurprising that MPs feel the 2040 ban ‘lacks sufficient ambition’.
And while over a quarter (28%) of drivers are positive about the ban, it seems that opinions are divided with 28% not agreeing. In fact, almost two thirds (65%) believe they should be able to buy whichever fuel vehicle they want and shouldn’t have restrictions imposed upon them by government.
“In the lead up to the ban, whether in 2040 or sooner, it’s likely we will start to see numerous incentives and penalties introduced. To measure public opinion and driver trends surrounding petrol, diesel and alternative fuel vehicles, we have created a fuel barometer. This will help to paint a picture of the future of motoring.”
