INTERVIEW/ COMMENT: Drivers pay over £1bn a year in fines
"We need to stop punishing the driver at every turn"
A study has today revealed that British drivers are hit with a penalty charge fine every 2.5 seconds. Amanda Stretton, motoring editor at Confused.com comments:
“It’s shocking that drivers are paying over £1billion a year in fines, whether this be parking penalties, speeding fines or getting caught in bus lanes. We need to stop punishing motorists at every turn.
“Our research shows that the average driver will rack up almost £10,000 worth of parking charges and fines over a 25-year period. One million penalties were issued last year for speeding and jumping red-lights. Almost two thirds (62%) of drivers are put off speeding by the presence of speed cameras but 28% still believe that these cameras are just a way for the police to make money.
“With rising motor costs, we need to be careful that these extra, and sometimes unfair charges, are not going to price drivers off the road. Those who feel a fine or ticket has been issued unfairly should challenge it. We also encourage all drivers to shop around at Confused.com to minimise motoring costs where possible.”
