INTERVIEW/ COMMENT: MOT FINES HAVE COST UK DRIVERS £35M OVER THE LAST 5 YEARS
New FOI data reveals that drivers racked up almost half a million penalties in the last five years for driving without a valid MOT and £35million in fines. Amanda Stretton, motoring editor at Confused.com comments:
“It seems MOT fines are the latest ‘cash cow’ plaguing motorists. While the onus is on drivers to ensure their vehicle is roadworthy, a helpful reminder system for drivers would no doubt bring the number of fines down.
“It’s likely that forgetfulness is just part of the reason some drivers are missing their MOTs. We suspect that rising motoring costs are having a significant impact on drivers’ affordability and that some people simply cannot afford to MOT their car. A reminder system would help drivers to plan ahead, so they don’t find themselves caught out by a surprise MOT renewal date and fines.
“Drivers who are struggling to meet their MOT costs could benefit by shopping around online and use Confused.com’s garage comparison service to make savings on their annual check up.”
