INTERVIEW/COMMENT: UK RUSH HOUR DRIVERS SPEND OVER £1,000 STUCK IN TRAFFIC
New data reveals that the UK drivers wasted 31hours in rush hour traffic last year*. Amanda Stretton, motoring editor at Confused.com discusses the financial burden this has on drivers. She says:
“We all realise traffic delays cost drivers valuable time and money, but to find that rush hour congestion costs motorists £1,168 a year is a sobering statistic.
“The government has said £23billion is being invested into road schemes, but it is clear we need to update our approach to traffic management. One solution is a ‘vehicle-miles travelled’ tax, taxing drivers by the distance they drive. This would have a significant impact on how much people use their car, but we would need to ensure those motorists who have no option but to drive were not being penalised unfairly.
“The cost impact of congestion is just one of a whole raft of motoring costs drivers are having to contend with. Shopping around online for things like car insurance, car finance and the cheapest stations to buy fuel are all ways drivers can save money. And these savings can mount up to £271 for the average driver by shopping around at Confused.com.”
