Amber Rudd is set to announce £9m of funding to fight ‘dark web’ criminals. Joe Hancock, Cyber Security Lead at Mishcon de Reya responds:

Arguably the £9m funding is too little too late. Cyber-crimes are currently beyond the capability of most local police forces, and have been for some time.

The dark web makes the headlines and rightly has a sinister reputation but isn’t the only place where criminality occurs. There are many criminals operating in plain sight across the internet.

Focusing on the wider enablers of online crime – such as unregulated cryptocurrencies, service providers that do not cooperate with law enforcement and websites that don't do enough to police fraudulent content – would have a far greater impact.
