Commenting on the news that Home Secretary Amber Rudd will today launch an investigation into the impact of international students on the UK, Kamal Rahman, Head of Immigration at Mishcon de Reya, said:
"It is critical that the soft power wielded by the UK when it comes to attracting international students is not overlooked in this investigation. Attracting international students has a net benefit for the UK while they are studying here and, in our experience, there is also a significant link between those seeking to invest in the UK and their prior connection with the UK as a result of higher education. Moreover, 97% of non-EEA national students return to their country of origin upon completion of their studies. A statistic that entirely supports removing this group from net migration figures – something much discussed and something that we would urge the government to do."
