Last week, details of Manchester United footballer Memphis Depay's contract were leaked, revealing the cost of the player. James King, an Employment Lawyer at Mishcon de Reya who specialises in advising football clubs and footballers, commented:

"Depay is the latest in a string of high-profile footballers who have had their contract or transfer details leaked – with previous players including Gareth Bale, Anthony Martial, Mesut Ozil. There is usually a confidentiality clause in the documents that would forbid either a club or a player from disclosing the details of the deal to anyone without the prior written consent of the other party or parties. Publication is therefore embarrassing for the clubs involved and also potentially for the player.

"We don't know how the contract has come to be leaked. The parties who would have access to the documentation include the buying club, the selling club, the player, the player's agent and potentially any lawyers representing the parties. Once the deal is agreed and signed, it is a requirement that the finalised paperwork be lodged with relevant national footballing authorities - for example, in the UK, the Premier/Football League and the FA."
