Met Office forecasters issue warning over…

With snow falling in the UK today, Met Office forecasters have issued a warning over icy roads. While transport authorities plan for the challenges that come with snow, clever traffic technology is on hand to those wanting to avoid commuter chaos. Finlay Clark, UK head of Waze, the real-time navigation app, urges commuters to plan ahead, especially when driving during the busy rush hour period. He says: “Data from Waze shows that when hazardous conditions like this hit, a journey time increases by approximately 30%, so for an average commute of 45 minutes, you’d be looking at an additional 14 minutes behind the wheel.  “Alerts – including accidents on the road – often increase by 140% during stormy or snowy conditions. Speeds are reduced as drivers take more care, from 26mph to 22mph on average (a 16% reduction). Meanwhile, a 20% reduction in kilometres driven suggests that many people stay at home and only make essential journeys. “If you have to drive in adverse weather conditions, Waze can re-route you around traffic and get you to your destination safely and effectively, guiding you on the best time to embark upon your journey. Over 1.9 million drivers in the UK rely on Waze’s crowdsourced real-time updates to save time and fuel.” Join this community today by downloading the free Waze app for iOs or Android athttps://www.waze.com/en For more information or live traffic updates, please contact charlotte@the10group.co.uk / 020 7637 0656

GOVERNMENT'S AIR POLLUTION STRATEGY TO…

Commenting on the Government’s air pollution strategy published today, Finlay Clark, UK Head of Waze hopes technology can also help combat congestion and the resulting pollution. He says:   “It is disappointing to see how poor the air quality is in the UK and the Government’s new air pollution strategy is a positive step towards improving these conditions. We welcome smart initiatives set to improve our roads – such as changing road layouts and removing speed humps.   “We urge people to consider how technology can help ease congestion and how we can use it to reduce the number of cars on our roads. Heavy congestion causing slow moving, stop-start traffic results in poor air quality – and we at Waze are constantly finding ways around this.   “Our research reveals that average speeds in the M25 region during 2016 decreased by 12% to just 17.4mph. Additionally, the number of traffic jams that have been reported around the capital was up by 56% last year. Overall, average speeds around the UK are decreasing as more cars take to the already congested road network.   “Understanding congestion in real-time is key to tackling the problem and Waze are working with city planners to improve the situation. Waze shares live data with over 175 global municipal partners in its Connected Citizen Program, including Transport for London and Oxfordshire Country Council in the UK. They are also piloting carpooling in Israel and the US with the aim of helping take cars off the road, which helps lower journey times and improve air quality.”

COMMENT: WAZE RESPONDS TO AWARD-WINNING…

UCL graduate Gergely Raccuja has won a prize for his plan to scrap fuel duty and vehicle excise duty to fund more investment in our roads and give UK drivers a better deal. Finlay Clark, UK Head of Waze, comments:   “We welcome smart initiatives to improve the condition of both our roads and air quality. As it stands, there are clearly too many cars on too few roads. This causes slow moving, stop-start traffic, and increased congestion causing the poor air quality.   “Data from Waze, the real-time, crowd-sourced navigation app reveals that average speeds in London during 2016 decreased by 12% to just 17.4mph. Furthermore, the number of traffic jams that have been reported around the capital was up by 56% last year. Overall, average speeds around the UK are decreasing as more cars take to the already congested road network.   "Whilst investment in the road network are welcomed, there are certain steps that can be taken in the meantime to avoid the worst of the congestion. Motorists can avoid traffic hotspots by considering alternative routes as well as re-planning routes around less busy times and roads.   “Understanding congestion in real-time is key to tackling the problem and Waze are working with city planners to improve the situation. Waze shares live data with over 175 global municipal partners in it’s Connected Citizen Program, including Transport for London and Oxfordshire Country Council in the UK. They are also piloting carpooling in Israel and the US with the aim of helping take cars off the road, which in turn helps lower journey times and improve air quality.”

THE GOVERNMENT'S AIR POLLUTION PLAN & THE…

In light of the Government’s air pollution plan, Finlay Clark, UK Head of Waze offers solutions to combat congestion and pollution. He says:   “It is disappointing to see how poor the air quality is in the UK and the Government’s new air pollution plan is positive step in addressing the rising pollution levels. However, we need to be focusing on the bigger picture of congestion and the future of urban mobility as there are clearly too many cars on too few roads. This is causing slow moving, stop-start traffic, and increased congestion resulting in poor air quality. “This is supported by research from Waze, the real-time, crowd-sourced navigation app which reveals that average speeds in London during 2016 decreased by 12% to just 17.4mph. In comparison, Birmingham has an average speed of 33mph. Furthermore, the number of traffic jams that have been reported around the capital was up by 56% last year. Overall, average speeds around the UK are decreasing as more cars take to the already congested road network. “Professor Begg, former chairman of the Government’s Commission for Integrated Transport states that the main cause of the extra pollution was worsening gridlock which had caused bus fuel efficiency to drop by more than a third since the millennium. He said: “Stop-start conditions caused by congestion are a key factor (and) lower operating speeds are bad for pollution. Under heavily congested conditions tailpipe emissions can be increased by a factor of three or four times.” “Understanding congestion in real-time is key to tackling the problem and Waze are working with city planners to improve the situation. Waze shares live data with over 175 global municipal partners in it’s Connected Citizen Program, including Transport for London and Oxfordshire Country Council in the UK. They are also piloting carpooling in Israel and the US with the aim of helping take cars off the road, which in turn helps lower journey times and improve air quality.”    To arrange an interview, please contact jess@the10group.co.uk / 020 7637 0656

The Shocking Truth About Bank Holiday…

New research by crowdsourced, sat nav app Waze reveals that judging by last May Day bank holiday traffic data, this Monday will in-fact be a better day to be on the roads than an average Monday. Last year there were 25% fewer drivers on the road and average speeds were also up by 10%. Time spent in the car was down 10% too!  The average km per driver was consistent with other Mondays, showing people are still going out for day trips, but because journeys are not confined to rush hours, they are able move around that bit quicker.   However, a word of caution...  [Scroll down for full release] For more information, or to arrange an interview with Finlay Clark, UK Head of Waze, please contact charlotte@the10group.co.uk  0207 637 0656

INTERVIEW: 18 months of M1 roadworks start…

East Midlands drivers are being urged to take initiative to reduce congestion caused by major roadworks starting today on the M1. The works are part of a £120m upgrade that are set to last 18 months. Highways England will be working on 7.5 miles of the route in a project which it says will make journeys faster and more reliable by providing an extra lane in each direction, particularly around East Midlands Airport. The work is part of a major government investment worth £15bn due for completion in winter 2018. Finlay Clark, Head of Waze UK says:   "Traffic is slowing around the UK and whilst investment in the East Midlands road infrastructure and upgrades are welcome, the short-term effect will cause misery for hundreds of thousands of motorists who use the M1 daily. We are already seeing drivers getting increasing frustrated at slow speeds and constant jams but there are certain steps that can be taken to avoid the worst of congestion.  “Motorists should avoid traffic hotspots when they can and consider alternative routes to their destinations. Waze can re-route drivers around traffic in real-time by tracking other road users' trips. The free app will get people to their destination safely and effectively in the fastest time possible, by guiding drivers on the best time to embark upon their journey and which roads to avoid.” The M1 carries more than 130,000 vehicles per day between Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire. It will be upgraded to a smart motorway between Diseworth (junction 23a) and Risley (junction 25). Between Diseworth and Kegworth (junction 24) the hard shoulder will be used at peak times, and between Kegworth and Risley it will be permanently converted to a fourth traffic lane. Download the free Waze app for iOs or Android at https://www.waze.com/en. For live speeds and congestion data on M1 routes and for interviews please contact charlotte@the10group.co.uk 0207 637 0656

INTERVIEW/COMMENT: LONDON TO BAN INTERNET…

In light of the proposal to ban vans delivering internet shopping from the Capital in a bid to slash congestion, Finlay Clark UK Head of crowd-sourced navigation app Waze reveals how traffic in the Capital has been getting worse year on year. He says;  “Internet shopping is undoubtedly on the rise as millions of us are choosing to browse and buy from the convenience of our homes. However this has had an effect on our roads, as traffic has increased due to a huge rise in delivery vehicles, with light vans now accounting for a fifth of traffic in the Capital. With internet shopping only set to increase, finding a solution to ease congestion levels is crucial.  “Our data revealed last year that average speeds in London have decreased by 12% to just 17.4mph. In comparison, Birmingham has an average speed of 33mph. Furthermore, the number of traffic jams that have been reported around the capital is up by 56% last year. With motorists currently paying £40 billion a year in overall motoring taxation, drivers are likely to be frustrated that they are facing increasing congestion. However there are certain steps that can be taken in the meantime to avoid the worst of congestion. “ Motorists should avoid traffic hotspots when they can and consider alternative routes to their destinations. Waze can re-route you around traffic by tracking other road users' trips. The app will get you to your destination safely and effectively in the fastest time possible, by guiding you on the best time to embark upon your journey and which roads to avoid." UK IS THIRD MOST CONGESTED COUNTRY IN EUROPE…

A new Inrix report shows drivers spend 32 hours a year stuck in traffic, making the UK the third most congested country in Europe. London is the second most congested city in Europe, only behind Moscow. Manchester, Aberdeen, Birmingham and Edinburgh all ranked highly. This is supported by research from Waze, the real-time, crowd-sourced navigation app which reveals that average speeds in London during 2016 decreased by 12% to just 17.4mph. In comparison, Birmingham has an average speed of 33mph. Furthermore, the number of traffic jams that have been reported around the capital was up by 56% last year. Overall, average speeds around the UK are decreasing as more cars take to the already congested road network. However there are certain steps that can be taken in the meantime to avoid the worst of congestion.  Finlay Clark UK head of Waze says: “With immense technological advancements available to help commuters get around busy cities - where there are far too many cars and not enough roads - it is disappointing to see how high congestion levels in the UK really are, as compared to the rest of the continent. “Gridlock costs the UK economy an estimated £30 billion a year. Yet there is a solution: real-time crowd-sourced data sharing can be utilised to improve traffic in urban areas. Anyone using the Waze app is helping other local road users by sharing anonymous GPS traces so the app can determine the worst roads and alleviate traffic across the road network in real time. "The app has been proven to shave minutes off of journeys and the more users who help contribute to our community, improves the app for everyone else on the road.  In the UK, Transport for London have access to and use the crowd-sourced data to help manage traffic for the millions of car drivers in the UK Capital.” Waze provides peace of mind by suggesting the fastest and most optimal route possible to any destination, by tracking real-time traffic and road conditions from drivers’ phones - thus saving other local drivers time and fuel. Join this community today by downloading the free Waze app for iOs or Android at https://www.waze..com/en. Storm Doris data: Waze predicts 140%…

An average 45 mins commute to see an additional…

The worst storm of the winter is set to batter Britain today, with the Met Office warning that Storm Doris will bring gale-force winds and snow to more areas than previously feared. Finlay Clark, UK head of the crowdsourced navigation app Waze is urging commuters to plan ahead - especially when driving during the busy rush hour period. Finlay Clark, UK head of Waze, says: “Data from Waze shows that when hazardous conditions like this hit, a journey time increases by approximately 30%, so on an average commute of 45 mins you’d be looking at an additional 14 mins behind the wheel.  “Alerts – including accidents on the road – often increase by 140% during stormy or snowy conditions. Speeds are reduced as drivers take more care, from 26mph to 22mph on average (a 16% reduction). Meanwhile, a 20% reduction on kilometres driven suggests that many people stay at home and only make essential journeys. “If you have to drive in adverse weather conditions, Waze can re-route you around traffic and get you to your destination safely and effectively, guiding you on the best time to embark upon your journey. Over 1.3 million drivers in the UK rely on Waze’s crowdsourced real-time updates to save time and fuel.” Link to live traffic map Waze provides peace of mind by suggesting the fastest and most optimal route possible to any destination, by tracking real-time traffic and road conditions from drivers’ phones. Join this community today by downloading the free Waze app for iOs or Android at https://www.waze.com/en. TUBE STRIKE: Real time data from Waze shows…

With the Central and Waterloo & City lines closed by strike action for 24 hours from 2100 last night, many commuters will be seeking alternative routes during peak rush hour times today. This has in turn seen an increase in congestion on London's roads.  Finlay Clark, UK head of Waze, says: "At Waze, we have a wide traffic data pool thanks to over half a million London Wazers and can therefore offer real-time road updates and insights like never before. These help drivers outsmart traffic and save time and fuel. "This morning we have seen 22% of traffic bumper to bumper at peak (8.03am) – effectively standstill. For comparison, at this time on a normal day it’s usually around 12%. There was also 24% heavy to moderate traffic, so nearly 46% of total traffic at crawling or worse. Trips took on average 18 mins longer than usual to get from Newbury Park to Gants Hill when approaching city from the East. We are expecting to see a similar increase in traffic on routes running from West and East London into central London as commuters take to the car some routes expected to be at walking pace. We are urging drivers to use Waze so they can be diverted around traffic in real-time.” A further update can be given upon request. In particular – a preview of what is to come with tonight’s evening rush hour commute home.  Latest London traffic alerts: https://twitter.com/WazeTrafficLON Waze provides peace of mind by suggesting the fastest and most optimal route possible to any destination, by tracking real-time traffic and road conditions from drivers’ phones - thus saving other local drivers time and fuel. Join this community today by downloading the free Waze app for iOs or Android at https://www.waze.com/en.
