LONDON TO CLOSE OVER 150 ROADS FOR LONDON MARATHON
SAT NAV APP WAZE PARTNERS WITH TFL TO PINPOINT ROUTES TO AVOID
Over 150 roads will be closed this weekend to make way for 39,000 runners participating in this year’s London marathon. With 138 road closures expected on Sunday alone, TfL and crowd sourced sat nav app Waze have partnered to help drivers avoid major delays, set to start from 6am Saturday morning.
Ten percent less journeys will be made in central London than the usual Sunday, with London’s drive time expected to exceed well over the average 48.4 minutes.
The transport experts launched a free, real-time site map so both locals and visitors can see exactly which roads are closed this weekend and during what times. The map and road closure information can be viewed here.
Waze will notify and direct drivers and spectators around road closures likely to affect them this weekend by providing the quickest and most efficient routes. The app works with TfL to collect the most accurate data for all 3 of the event days, which is a result of the Connected Citizens Initiative launched in 2016.
Drivers trying to get from A to B are not the only ones who will be affected by the planned road closures. Waze will also help spectators avoid over-crowded viewing areas by listing all closed roads, which are expected to be quieter areas to gather and show support.
Finlay Clark, Head of Waze UK, comments:
“Events like the London marathon are a great way of bringing people together to support one another. The planned road closures are essential to the event and can cause major congestion on London roads.
“The good news is that we’re constantly receiving live updates from over half a million London app users and this will allow us to help drivers avoid the worst of this weekend’s traffic.
"If you find yourself in a jam, the app provides peace of mind by suggesting the fastest and most optimal route possible to any destination, using real-time updates from fellow drivers – also working together to help each other get the most out of the weekend."
