Following the single’s success on the celebrated Netflix film, Soft Lad, UK-born south Asian songwriter Anjlee releases the music video trailer of Ready today. Produced by Karl ‘K-Gee’ Gordon (All Saints, Jessie J & Sugababes), the pair announce today that the title song will be officially released later this month.
The UK film is about a young man who has an affair with his sister’s husband. It is the directorial debut of actor director Leon Lopez, starring Jonny Labey (EastEnders) and Daniel Brocklebank (Coronation Street). Labey was listed for a BIFA as best new comer for his role in the film.
The song Ready received praise during the film’s debut at the East End Film festival. Soft Lad went on to tour UK national cinemas as part of The Pout Film Festival and also played international film festivals such as: Q film festival (Indonesia); Bangkok gay and lesbian film festival (Thailand); Thessaloniki International LGBTIQ Film Festival (Greece) before it was acquired by Netflix.
Anjlee wrote the title song using with the film’s challenging themes as inspiration. She says, “I had written parts of the song before the director asked me to create something for the film but it really took shape when we discussed the characters and their struggles. It’s a song about addictions and how we become attached to people and other things. I write autobiographically – about things around me, so this song is very personal.”
All Saints producer Karl ‘K-gee’ Gordon is no stranger to powerful female voices. He says, “Anjlee definitely brings back the old Motown feel when she jumps in the vocal booth. It’s refreshing to hear a sound like hers and work with someone with such a willingness to be musically experiemental.”
The south Asian singer and sister to former Miss Universe GB is driven by a love for pop and Motown. Anjlee sings with an Aretha-esque grit, a Stevie-like honesty and with the frivolous cheekiness of the Jackson 5.
The Italia Conti alumna moved to London from Teeside, North-East England and joined a girl-group named The Madame Project. The group performed for the Don't Trigger Campaign and the Mother's Against Guns initiative – they did so alongside acts such as Jocelyn Brown, Maxi Priest, Omar and Jessie J.
The group featured strongly on Radio 1 & Radio 1Xtra, Music Week and toured the UK recording with some the industry’s finest producers and writers. Anjlee left the girl-group to pursue a solo career and got her first break in featuring in Lincoln Savage’s “Mars”.
