INTERVIEW/COMMENT: UK UNEMPLOYMENT RISES

UK unemployment rose by 46,000 to 1.47 million in the three months to December*. Businesswoman and Ambassador to University Technical Colleges, Michelle Dewberry says: “As UK unemployment rates rise, I believe that we need to protect future jobs by updating the education system. We must ensure that we’re best preparing young people for the workplace by equipping them with relevant technical and employability skills. “Research commissioned by University Technical Colleges reveals that 8 out of 10 (80%) parents believe that the current education system needs to change – with a further two thirds fearing their child will not find a job when they leave education. “With technology changing UK businesses at a rapid rate, it is more important than ever to engage employers to discover the types of skills they look for and expect they will need moving forward. “UTCs work with more than 450 employers to ensure their students’ education is relevant to the world of work. They ensure that leavers have the necessary skillset to compete in the job market, and for apprenticeships and university places. “I have done an annual employment roadshow for the last six years and every year I see the same problems come up – job hunters with no experience struggling to get work. UTCs help fix this by giving students relevant experience and the exposure to employers from early on.” For more information, please contact charlotte@the10group.co.uk / 020 7637 0656 *ONS data

COMMENT: ONE IN FIVE UK JOBS COULD BE TAKEN…

New research released today reveals that robots could take over one in five UK jobs by 2030. Michelle Dewberry, former Apprentice winner responds. Michelle is a strong supporter of the University Technical College programme, which has established 49 employer-backed schools championed by industry leaders including Rolls-Royce, Siemens, Jaguar Land Rover and Microsoft. She says: “The new data predicts that 20% of our jobs could be taken over by robots in the next 12 years and while this is alarming, it’s somewhat unsurprising. We must act sooner rather than later to update the education system and prepare young people for the future workplace. The school system failed me but my apprenticeship was the making of me – and I believe that we should acknowledge the need to cater for different interests and abilities. “UTCs work with more than 450 employers to ensure their students’ education is relevant to the world of work. They ensure that leavers have the necessary skillset to compete in the job market, and for apprenticeships and university places.” http://www.utcolleges.org/  To arrange an interview with Michelle, please contact charlotte@the10group.co.uk / 020 7637 0656

Michelle Dewberry responds to Theresa May’s…

Michelle Dewberry, former Apprentice winner, is a strong supporter of the University Technical College programme, which has established 49 employer-backed schools championed by industry leaders including Rolls-Royce, Siemens, Jaguar Land Rover and Microsoft. She says: “I was happy to hear the Prime Minister speak about the importance of technical education in her Davos address today. I agree that we “need to help people secure the jobs of tomorrow” and believe the current school system needs to change to better equip young people with the skills they need to obtain future employment. “Research commissioned by University Technical Colleges reveals that 8 out of 10 (80%) parents believe that the current education system needs to change – with a further two thirds fearing their child will not find a job when they leave education. “With technology changing UK businesses at a rapid rate, it is more important than ever to engage employers to in the type of skills they look for now and for jobs of the future. The school system failed me but my apprenticeship was the making of me – and I believe that we should acknowledge the need to cater for different interests and abilities. “More than 450 employers support UTCs as well as scores of small and medium sized businesses. Together with nearly 50 universities they make sure UTCs’ education is relevant to the world of work and that UTC students benefit from profound employer engagement.” http://www.utcolleges.org/  For more information, please contact charlotte@the10group.co.uk / 020 7637 0656
